Description of the innovation projectPortable system based on SERS Plasmonic detectors for Brucella bacterial diagnosis through TBLISI phages. The scope of the invention is diagnosis. The portable SERS analysis kit allows field measurements for the species-specific detection of Brucella Abourtus bacteria by Tbilisi phage in aqueous solutions or microfiltered milk matrices. The key elements of the methodology are: Compact coupling system for SERS analysis and specie-specific recognition performed by certain bacteriophages (viruses) to certain types of bacteria. It consists of : a) a portable pointing system, b) a Raman type spectrophotometer equipped with a laser source for excitation of the sample and signal detection, and c) specimen sampling with specific bacteriophage-activated nanostructured sensors of the bacterium.

Industrial applicationThe invention relates to a portable SERS plasmonic spectroscopy system (Surface Amplified Raman Spectroscopy) for the detection of Brucella bacteria by "phage-based" technology. The system is equipped with highly efficient and functional plasmonic sensors to identify Brucella bacteria quickly, highly sensitive and specific, and in a user-friendly manner. The portable diagnostic system is engineered to be easily transported and used for "on-field" analysis.

Advantage factorThe great advantage of this kit is due to the high specificity offered by the use of bacteriophages, with the extreme sensitivity and rapidity associated with the use of dwarf biosensors with RAMAN system. In this way, a highly useful product could be marketed, able to detect, not only in an effective but also extremely rapid way, the presence of pathogenic bacteria in foodstuffs intended for human consumption.
Commercial challengeCosts for environmental analysis and monitoring are increasing at a rapid pace. Currently, the standard protocol involves the collection of samples in the field, their packaging, and shipping to a laboratory designated for analysis. This process takes a long time to process the analytical results. The proposed portable SERS system is aimed at bacterial diagnostics using phage-based technology; through this system a precise response is offered in a very short time.
