Description of the innovation projectDiet and environment play an important role in maintaining gut bacterial populations. The project aimed to increase the knowledge on the relations between dietary functional ingredients, gut microbiota, and their associated effects on brain functions. We plan to investigate the effect of Omega-3 fatty acids on gut microbiota in neurological diseases, and to determine whether the gut-brain axis dysfunctions might play a role in the pathogenesis of these disorders. Understanding the mechanisms behind the activity and proliferation of the gut microbiota by Omega-3 fatty acids will be the starting point to identify specific bacteria strains to be used as probiotic.
