Description of the innovation project The New Regina Margherita Road in Massafra is the first ecological road in southern Italy made with recycled rubber from out of use tires (PFU). The object of our project was the use of rubber dust resulting from the recovery of PFUs as an additive in bituminous conglomerates to achieve high performance "modified asphalt". The technology on which our experimentation work has been based is the asphalt rubber asphalt rubber "dry Italia", a hot bituminous conglomerate, dosed by weight or volume, consisting of natural aggregates, modified bitumen with high workability, additives and rubber powder inserted directly at the time of mixing (dry technique).

If all the roads were developed with this technology would solve the problem of the management of End of Life tyres. All this would give an impulse to the circular economy and would be a driving force for the development of new technologies as well as for the recycling Sector.

With a slightly higher initial investment, about 15% more than a common asphalt, it is possible to have a very good level of flooring, safe, noisy, that reduce causes cracks and holes. TESTS SHOWS THAT IT LAST 3 TIMES LONGER THAN TRADITIONAL ASPHALTS.
Advantage factorThe "dry Italy" technique uses modified bitumen with high workability and rubber powder with a very fine particle size.The use of modified bitumen ensures the improvement of mechanical performance, the high workability, allows the reduction of the smoke produced in mixing and spreading phase. The particular granulometry of the aggregates and the insertion of the rubber powder allow a great reduction of the rolling noise.
Commercial challengeTest on some important italian's roads made with bitumen modified with rubber powder shows that in 6 years the pavement did not request maintenance works.Thanks to the use of second hand raw material it was also possible to avoid emission of 40 tons of C02 and reduce the energy consumption by 70.000 kW/h, an energy saving equivalent to the monthly consumption of 300 families of the North of Italy.The lower environmental impact is perhaps the main aspect of this projects.
