Description of the innovation projectThe supercritical CO2 prototypal system makes it possible to transform waste from fish processing into an omega-3 high-content oil-based extract, to be used as a raw material in the nutraceutical, pharmaceutical and agricultural industries. Our extraction system uses a solvent that does not pollute the environment and is not dangerous for humans. The therapeutic properties of omega-3 fatty acids are established in the prevention of cardiovascular disease (the main cause of death in Western countries) and tumors. The products enriched in omega-3 are already widespread and their market is growing strongly.

Industrial applicationOur supercritical CO2 prototypal plant is a radical innovation in the field of green chemistry. Its ability is to extract biological molecules of the highest industrial value at purity levels that can not be replicated by other systems. In this particular application the entire fish processing sector is involved, focusing on the companies of all the Mediterranean countries.
Market segmentThe demand for omega-3 fatty acids on the pharmaceutical, nutraceutical and agri-food market is constantly growing. The importance of the fish processing industry in Italy is strategic both for the conservation of natural resources and jobs. Turning waste into raw materials is economically advantageous.
Advantage factorThe commonly used technologies for extracting omega-3s require the use of solvents that are hazardous to the environment and to humans. Our prototype plant achieves superior purity results of the obtained matrix, using supercritical CO2. This system is absolutely safe for humans and the environment, and can be applied to the current fish processing industries without changing production plans in any way.
Commercial challengeOur company has conducted careful studies on the economic sector of reference, verifying how the need to treat waste from the processing of fish products is increasingly urgent. Our innovative technology would allow us to enter strongly in a market of strategic importance.
